Dr Shanmugam is Consultant Cardiologist at St George’s University Hospital, London and an Honorary Senior Lecturer based in the Molecular and Clinical Sciences Research Institute at St George’s University of London. He graduated from King’s College, University of London with a first class BSc honours degree in 1998. He later trained on the South West London Cardiology rotation and completed specialist cardiology training in April 2013. He also completed an international fellowship at the National Heart Centre/ Duke-NUS Singapore in Device Therapy and Advanced Cardiac Imaging.
Dr Shanmugam is a recognised expert in general cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and heart failure. He has contributed to many national and international peer reviewed publications. He has a specialist interest in the importance of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition to help prevent heart disease.
Dr Shanmugam is the clinical lead for Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (a treatment that uses a specialised pacemaker to help restore heart function). He also leads the Cardiac Sarcoid services (a rare inflammatory condition that can affect the heart tissue and other organs).
Dr Shanmugam was an integral part of the team that developed and implemented the first national Heart Failure Unit in the UK. The unit opened in 2016, providing specialist nursing, therapist and cardiology care to admitted patients with heart failure. The Heart Failure team was nominated at the prestigious 2017 British Medical Journal Awards, for ‘Cardiology Team of the Year’.
