Fat Transfer

One of the main reasons why people might be discouraged from cosmetic surgery is because of a dislike of the synthetic materials used for enhancements. Others feel that such procedures both look and feel unrealistic. However, a fat transfer procedure could be the natural solution that you are looking for.

One of the major benefits of fat transfer is the fact that it uses your body’s own cells – simply moved from one area to another. Also, as it is not from animals or synthetic products it means that such a procedure comes with no risk of allergy or immune rejection.

What can fat transfer surgery treat?

People choose to have fat transfer surgery for a number of different purposes. In addition to cosmetic enhancement and to combat signs of aging, it can also be used to treat skin deformities, for reconstruction and to rectify defects such as:

  • Augmentation of the buttocks, breasts, lips or cheeks
  • Smoothing wrinkled hands or creased faces
  • Filling in and improving scar tissue or acne scarring
  • Enhancing and improving body contours

What does the procedure involve?

While the techniques for harvesting and transferring fat are constantly evolving, fat transfer involves extracting excess fat cells from unwanted areas (normally the stomach, thighs or buttocks), then re-injecting them into a different part of the body which requires more volume or a defect to be corrected.

The procedure is performed under general or local anaesthetic depending on the amount of fat required. The fat is harvested into syringes and cleansed to remove impurities before being injecting into the areas to be treated.

As some of this fat is expected to be reabsorbed by your body after each treatment, you may need several treatments in order to reach the look that you desire.

In addition to adding volume, this procedure also comes with the benefit of rejuvenating skin with a new and healthy blood supply.

How long will it take for me to recover?

Depending on the extent of the procedure and your individual circumstances, you should be able to return home on the same day as your treatment.

You can expect to experience bruising, redness and/or swelling after your treatment, which usually resolves itself after a week. For the following few weeks after surgery, it is advised that all forms of strenuous activity are avoided.

Where possible, surgeons will make incisions that can be hidden in the natural creases of your body, but any scars will naturally fade over time.
