Liposuction

If despite your best efforts to remove excess fat, you still cannot get the silhouette you desire, liposuction could be an excellent solution for both men and women.

Although not a treatment for obesity, liposuction is a great way to get rid of those stubborn fatty deposits that fail to respond to diet and exercise. So, if you’re suffering from problem areas, liposuction is a permanent solution to streamline your shape.

Liposuction is a procedure that can be carried out on most areas of the body. However, there is a limit to how much fat that can be removed, usually three litres or less. Also, it is worth remembering that the procedure removes the fat, but does not tighten the skin. So, although you can remove excess fatty deposits, you may find that in areas such as the stomach a tummy tuck procedure will also be needed in order to create the firm, flat abdomen you desire.

Do I need to diet in order to be considered for liposuction?

If you are carrying too much additional weight, your surgeon will advise you on what you will need to do before liposuction surgery can be considered. If you have just one or more areas where there are fatty deposits that you would like to have removed, then it’s unlikely you’ll be required to lose weight first.

What happens in a liposuction procedure?

A modern liposuction procedure is conducted after making very small incisions in the skin and inserting a hollow tube known as a cannula. The problem fat is then broken down with liquid and a syringe or vacuum pump is used to suck it out through the cannula.

Will the procedure leave any scars?

As very small surgical incisions are made, it means that there are very small scars. Wherever possible, these incisions will be made in places that are easy to hide or cover. Any scarring will quickly fade until they are virtually unnoticeable.

How long is the recovery time after the operation?

A liposuction procedure usually requires a general anaesthetic with a one night stay in hospital. Depending on the number of areas treated, you may be in the hospital for a day.

After the treatment, there is likely to be some swelling and tenderness around the treated areas, which could take a few weeks to settle down. According to the surgeon’s instructions post-surgery, you will need to wear a specialist support garment in order to help your body to heal and retain your new shape. The hospital will supply this specialist compression garment.

You should be able to return to work a few days after the procedure, depending on the areas that have been treated and you will be able to see the full results of your treatment after a few weeks.
