Male Chest Reduction (Gynaecomastia)
Male breasts are a common problem, not exclusively experienced by overweight men. In most cases, it’s actually a medical condition called gynaecomastia which can affect men of any age and cannot be improved by exercise or diet.
Many men resort to disguising the condition with baggy clothes but male chest reduction surgery offers a more permanent solution. This procedure creates a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest shape, which can greatly improve self-esteem.
What causes gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is usually caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen – oestrogen stimulates the growth of mammary gland or fatty breast tissue, leading to the development of feminine-looking breasts.
What does the procedure involve?
Your surgeon will discuss the options available to you but the procedure usually involves an incision around the nipple, from which excess fat and glandular tissue is removed using liposuction. If the breasts are large and the skin has stretched, the nipple may need repositioning.
Male breast reduction surgery is conducted under general anaesthetic, and usually requires an overnight stay in hospital. This is a permanent solution, meaning the breast tissue does not grow back. Any scarring is minimal and will eventually fade over time.
How long is recovery from male breast surgery?
As with most surgery, some bruising and swelling is normal, therefore it can take a few weeks before you are fully able to admire the results. You can generally expect to return to work after one week. Heavy lifting, sports and strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks.
You should wear a special compression vest day and night for at least three weeks to minimise bleeding and swelling, and ensure the skin conforms to the new shape.
