Breast Screening

The Radiology Department at Parkside Hospital provides a Breast Screening service (using Mammography) to detect the early signs of disease. The multi-disciplinary Unit is Bupa approved.

How can I arrange a Breast Screen?

If you are over 40 years old and have no current symptoms, you can refer yourself for a mammogram in order to detect the early signs of disease.

Alternatively, you can ask your GP to refer you. You may elect to have your breast screen as part of a general Health Screen during which you will also have a consultation with a private GP.

You should bring results (the films) of any mammograms that you have previously had.

Many women choose to continue to attend the bi-annual (NHS) National Breast Screening service (available to women over the age of 50 years) and to supplement this with a breast screen at Parkside Hospital on alternate years.

What should I do if I notice a change?

Depending on the change, your GP may refer you for triple assessment with a Breast Consultant Surgeon. This comprises of a clinical examination, imaging and image guided needle test if indicated, and finally a results appointment to discuss the outcome of your tests.

The NHS offer two week appointments arranged by your GP. Should you wish to be seen at Parkside Hospital sooner, please call our Client Service Advisors to book an appointment on 020 8971 8026.

What do I need to wear or bring to my appointment?

Please remember to wear a skirt or trousers so that you can easily undress to the waist for the screen. We advise you not to use talcum powder or spray deodorant.

What happens at a Breast Screen?

You’ll undress to the waist for the screening. The radiographer will ask you to sit or stand, positioning each breast between the X-ray plates.

The mammogram itself will take around 10-15 minutes. The images are reviewed by a Consultant Radiologist specialising in Breast Screening.

If an abnormality is found, we will call you to discuss the next steps. We may also need to call you back if the results of the test were inconclusive and a second screen is required.
