Dr Sauer is a consultant psychiatrist and clinical director at the Maudsley Hospital. He is also an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. He has been at the Maudsley Hospital since 1999 where he trained and was appointed a consultant in 2006. He has a number of peer reviewed publications, has written several books in psychiatry and is an examiner for the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
