Circumcision
This page will provide you with information about circumcision. For further details, please speak to your consultant.
What is circumcision?
This is an operation that removes foreskin. It is often recommended in adults for medical reasons, such as phimosis (tightening of the foreskin), balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO), returning infections and pain during sexual intercourse.
Are there any alternatives to circumcision?
A circumcision is the only trusted method of combating BXO, but for the other conditions listed above a dorsal slit operation or a preputioplasty could prove effective.
What will happen during the operation?
The patient will usually be placed under general anaesthetic, with the operation taking around 30 minutes to complete.
The surgeon will then remove the foreskin and seal any small blood vessels that have broken. Finally, the two edges of the skin will be stitched together (see figure 1).

Risks and complications
Any risks or complications will be discussed in advance of your treatment with your expert consultant.
Recovery
In most cases the patient can return home either the same day or the day after.
The penis will usually be bruised, swollen and feel sore for the first week after the operation. It is recommended you wear loose underwear and clothing, and refrain from having sex for at least three weeks.
Regular exercise has been found to help speed-up the recovery process; however, before embarking on an exercise routine do seek advice from your doctor.
