Prostate Cancer Screening
Prostate cancer is a common form of cancer in men. A Prostate Cancer Screening service is offered at Parkside Hospital in conjunction with leading Consultant Urologists.
Currently, there is no single definitive test for prostate cancer, but a blood test, the Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) is used as a primary indicator of risk. This test measures the protein that is produced by the prostate gland which stores semen in a liquid form. The levels of PSA in the body can be affected by several factors including prostate problems.
Can I be screened for prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer screening is typically undertaken if your GP or Consultant Urologist decides that it is appropriate.
If you’re male and any of the following factors apply to you, it may be worth discussing the merits of screening with your GP or Consultant Urologist:
- Aged between 40 and 75
- African-Caribbean heritage
- Family history of prostate cancer
- Diet high in red meat and saturated animal fats
What happens during the screening?
The screen comprises a digital rectal examination, a prostate or lower urinary tract assessment and PSA blood sample analysis. Your results will be available approximately 10
