Claire Speer

Physiotherapy Manager

Claire qualified as a Graduate Sports Therapist in 2004 and completed her Post Grad Diploma in Physiotherapy in 2006. Prior to joining Parkside Hospital and Cancer Centre London in 2018 she worked as Senior Physiotherapist at a private practice in SE London for 9 months, but missed the buzz of working in a larger hospital team.  She originally comes from West Yorkshire, having spent 8 years working at BMI The Huddersfield Hospital, and during her time there held Senior Physiotherapist and Physiotherapy Manager roles, before working as Director of Clinical Services for 2 years. Claire has also worked in the NHS and for a number of professional Rugby League clubs, most notably as Head Reserve and Academy Physiotherapist for Wakefield Trinity RLFC for 4 years.

Claire has clinical interests in knee injuries, pilates, hydrotherapy and is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists.  She is also an MSK Champion for the charity Versus Arthritis, working with a cohort of other health professionals around the country to try to improve musculoskeletal health for all.

Claire tries to combine her love of travel and sport with her passion for Physiotherapy, having worked as a volunteer physiotherapist at a number of major sporting events, most recently the 2018 Winter Paralympics in PyeongChang, as well as London World Para-athletics 2017, Rio Olympics 2016 and Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014. Away from work she likes to keep active in the outdoors, whether that be walking, cycling, bouldering, playing tennis or occasionally running.

Her advice to patients is to set yourself small achievable goals along with your physiotherapist; it can be surprising how a little bit of activity everyday can improve both pain and function.

She also recommends that you be patient with your body when undergoing a course of physio, quick fixes don’t happen that often. Good physios work with the normal healing functions of your body to optimise movement and help control pain, improve strength or flexibility, and ultimately to allow you to move more normally, but this can take time.

Ask your physio to help you understand the healing processes that go on within your body and how long it is likely to take to improve depending on the structures involved.

Deborah Earl

Deputy Physiotherapy Manager

Deborah graduated from Brunel University in 2001 and completed her junior rotations in Reading before returning to London and taking up a post at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2003. She specialised in Musculoskeletal disorders and made the move to Parkside Private Hospital in 2009.

Deborah is passionate about exercise based therapy and in keeping people active whatever their age or ability. She has vast experience in the management of musculoskeletal pain disorders, hydrotherapy and post operative rehabilitation and in the management of complex rheumatological conditions. She particularly enjoys assisting her patients through their individual rehabilitation journey and in working with patients to help them achieve their goals. She completed her MSc in Sports and Exercise Rehabilitation at University of Hertfordshire in 2014 and is fully trained in Pilates and acupuncture.

The one piece of advice she would give to patients is that all activity, even just a small amount, can make a big difference and you should choose something you enjoy as you are more likely to stick to it!

Tracy really enjoys the variety of work at Parkside, and using a wide range of skills to facilitate patients back to recovery.

Abby Armstrong

Senior Outpatient Physiotherapist

Abby completed her training at the University of Southampton in 2003, and before working at Parkside she worked in a variety of NHS Hospitals including QMC in Nottingham, Barnet and Chase Farm in Hertfordshire and The Whittington Hospital in London. She also worked as a locum, working in some unusual environments, treating patients at the Mars chocolate factory, Sky TV and Heathrow Airport.

Abby loves being part of the team at Parkside, she recognises that everyone is supportive of each other and that makes work seem far less like work.

She finds treating pelvic organ prolapse and continence issues in the women’s health population extremely rewarding, as there is often so much that can be done that really makes a difference. She really enjoys supporting bone health patients, as they often struggle to find practical, helpful advice for how to manage Osteoporosis in its differing progression, she finds that treatment really helps their confidence.

Abbys top tip for patient’s coming for Physiotherapy at Parkside is…don’t forget your shorts! Tight jeans can be tricky during assessment and treatment!

Outside of work Abby loves outdoor swimming, preferably in unusual locations such as Scottish Lochs and Hampstead ponds. The Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye is on her bucket list and she plans to get there one of these days!!

One of Abbys undercover personas is a London Tour Guide! As a Londoner born and bred she loves collecting nuggets of knowledge about The Big Smoke. She is happy to divulge during treatment sessions at no extra charge!

Hugo Dias

Senior Outpatient Physiotherapist

Hugo qualified as a physiotherapist from Escola Superior de Saúde Egas Moniz – Portugal in 2014. He worked in Lisbon for 2 years where he acquired experience in Muscukoskeletal conditions working in sports, public hospital and private clinics. In 2016 he decided to take on a new challenge and moved to London, working in private clinics until joining Parkside Hospital in 2019.

Hugo is has an interest in the jaw, facial pain and the role that the function of the jaw has in other conditions within the body. He has trained in manual therapy techniques and kinesiotaping.  He is also interested in pain modulation and physiology as he believes that pain can be much more than just a “damaged structure”.

Outside work, Hugo is a travelling addict and is always planning his next destination. He is a keen sportsman and enjoys a variety of physical activity, his favourites being running and cycling, and he cycles to and from work every day. This allows him to pursue his other passion without guilt…he is a real foodie and loves to eat, as much as he loves to cook.

Hugos advice for patients coming for Physiotherapy at Parkside Hospital is to try to use your physiotherapist as a resource to improve your whole body condition.  You may be coming about one injury or problem, but this can be a catalyst to overcome previous limits and restrictions and improve your overall fitness. With the help of your physiotherapist you can make a big change!

Kathryn Brodie

Senior Outpatient Physiotherapist

Kathryn qualified as a physiotherapist in 2006 from the University of Cardiff. From here she went on to complete her rotational and specialist training at Cardiff & Vale NHS trust. Whilst in Wales she gained invaluable experience working in Rugby which required pitch-side injury management and progressed her rehabilitation skills and return to play decision making.

Kathryn followed her interest in Rugby to New Zealand where she worked in Wellington and first developed a love of road cycling, which has persisted to this day. Commute cycling in London involves far fewer penguin sightings but similar levels of wind and rain and a lot more double decker buses to contend with. The ability of the human body to adapt through strength and conditioning is of great interest and she enjoys the challenges so often faced in rehabilitation. Especially in the sporting patient and with the management of lower limb injuries.

On return to the UK Kathryn worked in a number of London NHS teaching hospital’s before moving to Private Practice in 2013. She undertook a Masters in Physiotherapy at Kings College London. This qualification has greatly advanced her expertise in both assessment and manual therapy techniques, it has changed the way she reasons and structures her management of all musculo-skeletal injuries. Whilst studying she was able to advance her interest in spinal and complex pain conditions, completing her thesis in the role of exercise for low back pain. Remarkably this research did not put her off treating low back pain, and spinal injuries remain an area of special interest.

Kathryn is acupuncture and Pilates trained, she continues to enjoy utilising these skills to facilitate the rehabilitation process as well as teaching regular Pilates classes and 1:1 sessions. Her passion lies in adopting a patient centred approach, using all facets of physiotherapy to encourage patients to optimise their potential and guide them through the rehabilitation process.  When asked what aspect of her job she enjoys most it is enabling patient’s to achieve their goals, be it to complete a triathalon or walk up the stairs without a walking stick.
